Systema is a Russian Martial Art that eschews tech

Systema is a Russian Martial Art that eschews techniques and instead focuses on universal principles. As a result, the training takes a freer form and students study survival in a broad variety of situations instead of responding to fixed attacks. Training in Systema takes a very personalized approach surfacing individual strengths and weaknesses. This is why the old name for Systema in Russian is “Poznai Sebia”, or “know thyself” - it is an art to help us understand who we really are.

In this class we study the concept of “meeting” our attackers before the contact. This gives us the right body preparation for the attack without which every punch becomes a surprise to the nervous system and overwhelms it.

Martin has decades of experience in both practical self defense, starting as a bouncer in the UK working his way to being a contract instructor for special forces such as the US Navy SEALS and SWAT teams. He has been featured on Discovery Channel, Blackbelt Magazine and many other media outlets as an authority on self defense and combatives.

We will also be have 2 special segments with head instructor of Systema Tokyo - Takahide Kitagawa. Taka will be sharing 2 topics on how Systema groundfighting works and also how Systema training can benefit other martial artists! Look out for those special classes too!

Today we spent a good amount of time working with the legs instead of hands to bring the same kind of full body intelligence and control to the lower half the body that we usually delegate to just “getting from place to place” or “kicks”. This helps us to layer in subtle control of situations that are usually missed by focusing only on the upper body.
