Systema Fundamentals

Systema is a Russian Martial Art founded in its modern form by the late Colonel Mikhail Ryabko and Vladimir Vasiliev. Systema was designed to develop individuals in a combative style which is non-destructive – even of one’s enemies.

A holistic approach to training the body and psyche, Systema employs simple exercises and emphasizes natural and intuitive movements in self defense.

It just so happens to be a martial art

Vladimir Vasiliev

Features and benefits of Systema

Through basic exercises and simple breathing techniques, helps individuals to build strong and supple bodies and relaxed psyches in everyone who trains. All movements are made from a calm state of mind which is as useful outside the gym as inside.

There are just 4 basic principles in Systema: Breathing, Relaxation, Movement, and Form.

Systema and other martial arts

The first most obvious difference between Systema and other martial arts is that we eschew the use of any techniques or memorized patterns. All our movements are natural and unchoreographed – leading to a very dynamic and creative learning environment.

In Systema, we do not have any belts or ranks. All practitioners of every level train with each other with a spirit of co-operation and mutual respect. This approach to training fosters a strong community spirit and encourages a harmonious approach to learning.
