What an amazing weekend with @wheelersystema where we studied a full spectrum of Systema - from ground fighting, stand up and practical knife defense. A big thank you to Martin for his generous sharing and for giving us such a clear picture of how to grow in this beautiful art that has been shared to us and to give us a fresh lens into the challenge of capturing the genius of Mikhail Ryabko in formulating such a complete system that spans the healing, psychological, spiritual and combative work.

Truly the beauty and challenge of Systema is expressed in the freedom that it offers. As Martin said succinctly: “hold it too tightly and it becomes a martial art”.

Systema is a Russian Martial Art that eschews tech

Systema is a Russian Martial Art that eschews techniques and instead focuses on universal principles. As a result, the training takes a freer form and students study survival in a broad variety of situations instead of responding to fixed attacks. Training in Systema takes a very personalized approach surfacing individual strengths and weaknesses. This is why the old name for Systema in Russian is “Poznai Sebia”, or “know thyself” - it is an art to help us understand who we really are.

In this class we study the concept of “meeting” our attackers before the contact. This gives us the right body preparation for the attack without which every punch becomes a surprise to the nervous system and overwhelms it.

Today we spent a good amount of time working with

Today we spent a good amount of time working with the legs instead of hands to bring the same kind of full body intelligence and control to the lower half the body that we usually delegate to just “getting from place to place” or “kicks”. This helps us to layer in subtle control of situations that are usually missed by focusing only on the upper body.
